“Imagine putting up a neon sign for a crackhouse. That’s what a video slot machine is for some people,” Sarah Paul, (a behavior health counselor) said. “It’s a bright, flashy sign for an addict.”
“People don’t like to think about gambling addiction. But it can — and very often does — cause the same kind of destruction as drug addiction or alcoholism,” Paul said. “We are seeing people who gamble away entire inheritances. Paychecks. And these are people who we first see because they are feeling depressed, dealing with anxiety or other problems. They come to us and then we discover the gambling and the role it plays in their lives.
